Where Does the Background Check Information Come From?

The background check is an essential part of the hiring process!

It’s a common misconception that there’s one huge database that employers and property managers can just search and find whatever information they need in order to complete a background check. If only it were that simple! In reality, there are actually hundreds of databases and sources that need to be checked and cross-checked and even then there may still be something that was reported erroneously. This is why the adverse action rules in the FCRA are so important. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows applicants to dispute background check information they believe to be untrue. So where is all of this background check data coming from?

Identity Verification

This actually comes from the applicant themselves. Through things such as a driver’s license or other government-issued identification, passport, social security card, and birth certificate. Many employers and property managers are actually transitioning to online applications which greatly reduce the likelihood of errors or misunderstanding due to illegibility.

Education and Employers

In order to verify education and employment, it’s generally best to contact those schools and businesses directly. Due to the risk of bias, employers generally only disclose basic information such as employment dates, job title and responsibilities, and salary information.

Financial Information

Financial information is obtained by running a simple credit check. Checking an applicant’s financial history allows an employer or property manager to make sure that person can be trusted with money, or to pay their rent on time.

Government Records

Federal, State, and County records can be accessed in the respective courthouses. There is often more criminal record data at the State and county levels because crimes aren’t always reported to the national databases. This tends to add time to the background check process because it’s just more data that needs to be checked and verified.
