What Are Employers Looking for in Employee Background Checks?

Every time you apply for a job, your prospective employer will perform a background check at some point in the application/ hiring process.

Every time you apply for a job, your prospective employer will perform a background check at some point in the application/ hiring process. Hiring managers are responsible for choosing the best applicants to fill vacancies in the company’s workforce while protecting the other employees and other company assets. Since not all applicants are always forthcoming about every aspect of their history, background checks are a necessary part of the job application process. Here are a couple of the main things those hiring managers are looking for when background checks are performed.

Employment History

When applying for a job, you usually either have an application where you fill in your employment history, or you hand in a resume, sometimes even both. One of the things the hiring manager will look for in your background check is to see if your actual employment history matches the information that you’ve given to them. If there are any gaps or other discrepancies, that is a red flag.

Education

A prospective employer will also be interested in your education level. Pretty much every job you apply for will require a high school diploma or GED. Many other positions require a certain level of secondary education, such as trade school or some other type of training. If you haven’t completed your training, it’s best to just leave it off of the application and you can mention that you’re working on it during your interview.

Criminal History

If an applicant does not disclose criminal history on a job application but it shows up on a background check, this will almost certainly cost them the job. Hiring individuals with a criminal history presents a huge liability risk for companies.

Drug Test Failures

Much like those with a criminal past, candidates who have previously failed a drug test also put a company at risk. Remaining drug and alcohol-free is especially important if the employee will be driving or operating any type of machinery that could put public of company safety at risk in any way.
