3 Reasons to Avoid Pre-Offer Background Checks

At some point as a hiring manager, you may have an interview that goes so well that you want to run the applicant’s background checks right away before you officially offer them the job. While you may not want to wait another minute, it might be a good idea for you to hold off. As long as you have the applicant’s written consent, there isn’t anything illegal about running the check ASAP, but it’s not a best practice. Here are a couple of reasons it’s a good idea to wait until after you put in an actual offer to run background checks.

Stick to What You Know

The vast majority of companies have a policy of waiting until after an actual employment offer is made, and accepted, before running background checks. These policies have been put in place for many reasons, not the least of which being that it just makes more sense to do it that way. Sticking with tradition is the best way to go when it comes to your company’s policies on background checks.

Too Much Information Can Be a Bad Thing

There’s nothing on the actual job application to reveal details such as race, religion, political affiliation, or other such details about an applicant. However, background checks would reveal most of these things and more. If you were to perform a background check before offering a job, the applicant could file a lawsuit against you saying that you discriminated against them. If you place the employment offer and make it contingent upon a clean background check, there’s no room for discrimination allegations.

Not Very Cost-Effective

Last, but certainly not least, is the cost of all of those background checks. It makes perfect sense to run background checks on someone that you intend to hire. What wouldn’t make sense is running background checks on every applicant, only to end up not hiring the person. This practice would add up quickly, and could end up costing your business quite a bit of money.
