So, what is the NAIC? To put it briefly, the NAIC is a national organization of insurance commissioners. It was created in 1871 by the lead insurance regulators from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and the five U.S. territories. To this day, the NAIC establishes and regulates standards and best practices for insurance companies nationwide. They also make sure that every state is conducting peer review and otherwise regularly practicing regulatory oversight. They even create model laws and regulations for insurance companies. What does this mean for you? This means that insurance companies in the U.S. must all uphold certain statewide standards so that you can know what to expect.
