Bad Hire Blues? Fix It with Background Checks! Pt. 2

In our last blog, we discussed a couple of stereotypically “bad hires” and how background checks can help you prevent yourself from running into the kinds of issues they cause. So we’ve covered the constant complainers and the employees who try to get too close for comfort already; what are some of the other types of bad hires you can make, and how can an effective background check prevent this from becoming a problem? Read on to find out!

You’ve hired a deadline delayer.bad-hire-blues-2

“I’ll get it to you by the end of the day/tomorrow/next week” is probably this bad hire’s favorite phrase. It may be a consequence of laziness or simply a consequence of not understanding the work well enough to do it efficiently, but either way someone who cannot meet their deadlines is going to drag down your company productivity overall. A background check can reveal much about an employee’s work history, and if this sort of behavior turns out to be a chronic condition, you can avoid making a mistaken hire.

You’ve hired an isolated independent.

Being able to be self-motivated is a very desirable quality in an employee, but as well as they are able to work independently, your employees should also be able to work well as a team. Someone who begrudges tasks that call for cooperation is not someone that will help your business get to the next level. Background checks and information from references can help you spot these “I-know-best” individuals and help you set your sights on someone who is more of a team player instead.

You’ve hired a rule-ignorer.

Sometimes, an employee will act as though the rules and stipulations set out by your company do not apply to him or her. This kind of brash, presumptuous attitude is not only irresponsible, but dangerous. Look into the work history of all your applicants to spot evidence of infractions that could put your company in jeopardy, and then quickly look elsewhere for your new hire.
