What’s Taking So Long? Possible Reasons for Delays in the Background Check Process

When you’re waiting for background check results to come in, it can seem like an eternity.

When you’re waiting for background check results to come in, it can seem like an eternity. For hiring managers, you’re anxious to fill that position in your company. For applicants, you’re ready to start that new job. Background checks are necessary, so you need to make sure you have the correct timeline in mind so you don’t go stir-crazy while waiting for results.

What Can Go Wrong?

It may seem to a hiring manager that it is the company that is performing the background check that is holding up the process, this isn’t necessarily the case. In fact, it is actually very seldom true. There are a number of factors that could contribute to delays in the background check process.

  • Too many checks requested– If a hiring manager is unaware what information is included in different background checks and just orders all of them, this can cause huge delays. Since there are so many different checks, running all of them on all employees can be time consuming.
  • Verifying previous employment– If a previous employer is unresponsive or can’t be reached, this can cause delays. It can also be somewhat difficult if an applicant previously worked for a large corporation because they sometimes have their own background check databases.
  • Incorrect, inaccurate, or incomplete information– A background check cannot be properly completed without all of the required information being complete and correct.
  • Lack of consent– If an applicant doesn’t give his or her consent to the background check, the agency performing the check may sent back the request until consent is given.
