The Real Cost of Inadequate Background Screening (and How to Avoid it)

Background screening policies are one of the best ways to ensure that your company thrives.

Background screening policies are one of the best ways to ensure that your company thrives. After all, you want to find and recruit the best possible talent to help your business be the best it can be. If your background screening policies are lacking, it can lead to some harsh consequences.

A Recent Case

In August, the United States Youth Soccer Association settled a court case alongside its Northern California affiliate organization. The settlement was for $8.2 million, and the lawsuit was brought over the program’s failure to properly screen one of its volunteer coaches who turned out to be abusing a player on his team. That is just one example of what it can cost to not do your due diligence with background screening. How do you prevent these costs?

Background Screening New Hires

No matter what industry you are in, it is important to screen all new hires. You should also screen existing employees, even long-time ones, on a regular basis. New candidates are far more likely to be subject to background checks than your current workers. But when you screen everyone who applies to work for you, you can create a safer working environment for everyone, and everyone that your employees are responsible for, including students and athletes that they mentor.

Conduct Criminal Checks

Another key part of improving background checks is to conduct relevant criminal checks. You can ensure these happen by consulting with the county court systems closest to where you live and work. You should also screen for potential criminal activity at the federal level, as well. Run the applicant’s name through a national criminal database, and then confirm your findings with the local courts for more accurate results.

Go Deeper

Once you’ve done that, you should go deeper.  Through deeper screening procedures, you can discover which of your employees actually earned the certifications, licenses, and degrees that they claim to have. You can also determine if there are any known sex offenders who will be attempting to work with minors.
