Quick Background Check: Is it Right for Your Business?

Quick Background Check: Is it Right for Your Business?

The level of checking a job or rental applicant needs can vary, so what sort of background check is appropriate?

Hiring managers perform background checks on prospective employees to protect their business. A rental agent will do a background check to see if a prospective tenant poses a risk to their property. The level of checking a job or rental applicant needs can vary, so what sort of background check is appropriate? Is just a quick background check really enough?

The Pros and Cons of a Quick Background Check

  • Efficient- There are many online databases you can search, usually in very little time.
  • Affordable- because a quick background check can be performed so quickly, it is usually quite a bit cheaper.
  • May help positions be filled faster- Since the check itself takes very little time, it can help you hire new people faster.

  • Can be misleading when not properly explained
  • May lead to hastily-made decisions
  • Database searches can sometimes be inaccurate
  • It is up to the user to make sure that they are following all local and Federal background check guidelines
  • Unless users have a complete understanding of the FCRA, they are increasing their risk in whatever hiring or tenant decision they make.

It is important to keep in mind that just because a background check takes longer does not mean that the results will be any more accurate. For many situations, a quick background check is all that’s needed. If a quick background check turns up a result that you would like to investigate further, you can do that.

Using Quick Background Checks

Rather than just doing a quick background check and having that be the end of it, the quick check should just be step one. An instant search can only turn up so much information. Quick background searches are great, but there is no substitute for a full background check. You can perform a quick check as a first step so that you can start the hiring process with a qualified candidate. If a quick background check determines that your applicant is qualified for the position, you can start the on-boarding paperwork while you wait for the results from the full background check.
