It is extremely important to make sure that the information you collect about your applicants is correct. Do they have a criminal record? Did they lie on their resume? When someone applies for a job, they certify that all of the information that they put on their application is correct. Sometimes, this is unfortunately not always true. There are many different things an applicant could lie about that could cause inaccuracies in a background screening, but maintaining accuracy should be your top priority.

A study was performed by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners and 96% of the employers that were surveyed reported that their main background screening goal was to weed out any applicants that may have committed violent crimes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that there is an average of five violent crimes per 1,000 employees, per year. When violent crimes are committed in the workplace, productivity goes down, there are lost wages, medical expenses increase, and overall company morale is usually negatively affected.

Performing accurate background screenings on all applicants drastically reduces the potential for violence and other toxic workplace behavior. Challenges to Accuracy in Background Screenings

There is a myriad of reasons for potential inaccuracies in the background screening process. These inaccuracies could cause one of two things to happen: a false negative or a false positive. When a false positive occurs in the background screening process, it means that the applicant’s screening report showed that they have a criminal record when they actually don’t. A false negative result is when a report shows that the applicant has no criminal record when they actually do have one.

Two of the biggest reasons for these inaccuracies are:

  1. The person in charge of hiring neglected to obtain other identifying information when an applicant has a common name or other common information.
  2. The applicant supplied inaccurate information on their paperwork.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that all background screening agencies take reasonable precautions to make sure the data they are reporting is accurate.
