Fingerprinting Rideshare Drivers

Fingerprinting Rideshare Drivers

Other professional drivers who are responsible for taking their passengers from one destination to another, such as taxi drivers, limo drivers, and bus drivers all need to be fingerprinted as well. So why shouldn’t rideshare drivers be subject to fingerprinting?

Ridesharing has become increasingly popular and convenient over the past few years. Consider it the evolution of the taxi. Other professional drivers who are responsible for taking their passengers from one destination to another, such as taxi drivers, limo drivers, and bus drivers all need to be fingerprinted as well. So why shouldn’t rideshare drivers be subject to the same process?

How Fingerprinting Benefits Drivers

New drivers for all rideshare services are always applying. However, the fingerprinting process will also lead to the services becoming more selective with their hires. This would contribute to higher wages, less driver turnover, and more skilled drivers, which also benefits their customers.

Reasons for Controversy

That said, this debate is exactly that – a debate. Major ridesharing companies are against following local regulations for fingerprinting because it would limit their available pool of drivers. In fact, this has even spurred these companies to leave certain cities behind entirely because they feel like such regulations would threaten their business.

Background Checks

Ultimately, background checks are important for everyone involved. It lends companies credibility that their drivers can be trusted while drivers can feel assured that they are who they say they are and they cannot be turned away from a driving job for less than valid reasons. Fingerprinting boosts identity verification, which increases the bond between driver and passenger, helping make the drive more comfortable for everyone.

Name-Based Identity Searches

Although these are the quicker and easier method, name-based searches are also unreliable. Important identifying information such as name, date of birth, and social security numbers can be falsified or used fraudulently. All of the information is correct, but that is not to say that it is accurate.

Fingerprint-Based Background Checks

These background checks can take slightly longer to obtain, but they are worth it. If rideshare services want to find the best drivers, then fingerprints can reveal background and criminal records more accurately than almost any other type of information.
